It’s been over a year since we started campaigning for redhead emojis to be added to smartphones, and slowly but surely, the tides are changing, my friend.

Facebook has announced that from this week onwards you will be able to use ginger emoji characters on your Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps, on both Apple and Android devices, with the change aiming to “make emojis more representative of the world we live in”.

Finally, the technological world is starting to represent redheads! About time, too. The characters above are the first ones we’ve been able to glimpse at, but others are said to be released gradually over time, too.

The new redhead emojis are part of a release of 1,500 diverse characters, in what Facebook calls “gender-agnostic and multi-coloured options”, and will be available following app updates deployed from Thursday 2nd June onwards.

They posted: “On all platforms, the Messenger composer will now include an emoji picker to help you select the perfect emoji. Tap the new emoji icon at the left of the composer to find just the right emoji. It’s now easier than ever to toggle in between the regular text keyboard and the emoji keyboard.”

Facebook may be ahead of the ginger emoji game, but all is not lost elsewhere in the tech world. Earlier this year, Unicode put forward the recommendation for red hair as a modifier on the emoji keyboard, much like you can currently select other hair colours and skin tones.

Here’s to a more gingerful way of expressing ourselves through emoji, the fastest growing language on the planet.
