National Love Your Red Hair Day: What it is and how to celebrate

If you’re reading this on 5 November, happy National Love Your Red Hair Day! And if you’re a Brit thinking “isn’t that Bonfire Night?” – yes, it’s both. Fireworks and fiery hair on the same night. It works perfectly.

Redheads aren’t short of special days – there’s a whole calendar of redhead events. There’s World Redhead Day in May and a whole festival in the Netherlands every summer. So, how shall we celebrate?

6 ways to celebrate National Love Your Red Hair Day

  1. Wear it loud. Red hair down, hat off (weather permitting), and wear something in a colour that makes your red sing. Teal, emerald and navy are always winners.
  2. Give your red hair a treat. A hair mask is like a warm hug for your red hair – treat it like royalty.
  3. Do a skin check. It’s not the most glamorous way to celebrate, but it’s a good one. Fair skin and red hair come with a higher risk of skin cancer, so it’s worth getting to know your moles. Our guide to a skin self-check walks you through it.
  4. Read or watch something red-haired. Pick a book with a ginger hero, or a film with a red-haired lead, and make an evening of it.
  5. Share your story. Post a photo, tell someone how you learned to love your red hair, or send a kind word to a young redhead who might need to hear it.

Love your red hair (every day)

National Love Your Red Hair Day may only come once a year, but between the genetics, the history and the fact that only 1-2% of the world shares our hair colour, we reckon redheads have something to celebrate every day. Enjoy the day, gingers!
