Redheads and vampires theories

Ginger Parrot is ready and raring to report on all…
Why do people think redheads are vampires?
Although we all think being a redhead is the greatest blessing, it hasn’t always been this way.
Yes, people genuinely thought that redheads were blood-sucking immortal creatures that would burn in sunlight. And, there was a time, believe it or not, when people linked vampires to red hair and Judas.
The ‘redheads and Judas’ theory
It was widely believed that Judas became the first ever vampire on earth, when he committed suicide after his betrayal of Jesus Christ.
In many religious paintings and texts, Judas is described and depicted as a redhead.
So of course, those who are born with flaming ginger locks, must all be descendants of Judas – the original vampire!
The death theory
But, the myth that links redheads to vampire dates back even further…
Ancient Greeks believed that redheads turned into vampires when they died, and actually burned the bodies to stop redheads from rising from the dead!
So yes, thanks to us, cremation was created! Aha!
The blood theory
During the Middle Ages, it was heavily believed that if a baby was born with red hair, they were conceived while the mother was menstruating. The blood produced by menstruation was also believed to link redheaded children to vampires.
The folklore theory
Contesting the “gingers have no soul” insult, Romanian folklore ironically speaks of vampires having red hair, blue eyes and, here’s the best part…two hearts!
Today, people still joke about redheads being supernatural creatures – I guess we are too unique!
While the comments may bother some of us, we can all thank our lucky stars, that being called a vampire or witch is only a tease and we will not be facing the gallows any time soon.
But, if you’d like to play on the theories, you could always dress up as a redheaded vampire for Halloween.
