Hari Nef to play the ginger Barbie in the new ‘Barbie’ film

Hari Nef is a model, actress, activist, and was the face of Gucci’s fragrance ‘Bloom’. She was the first transgender model to appear on the cover of major British magazines like, Elle. She was also the first transgender model to be signed with IMG Models, who also work with Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid. 

The trailer for the new Barbie film was released on 4 April, and it was revealed that Hari Nef is to play the role of a Barbie with red hair! If the ginger Barbie hitting our screens isn’t fantastic enough, she is also the doctor of ‘Barbie Land’. 

The film is set in the Barbie Land – more specifically a fictionalised California, Malibu. Although the trailer doesn’t give much away, we know that the plot will consist of the ‘main’ Ken and the ‘main’ Barbie taking a trip together into the ‘real world’ to navigate their blossoming romance. The pair are played by none other than, Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. 

Soon after Hari Nef was cast as the ginger Barbie, she sent a letter to Greta Gerwig, practically begging her to rearrange the filming schedule so that she could make it. Greta Gerwig is the screenwriter and director of Barbie, she has also worked on films like: Little Women, and Lady Bird. 

In the touching letter, Nef wrote:

And while Nef starring as a ginger Barbie is a big deal, Emerald Fennell and Michael Cera will also be waving the redhead flag as Fennell appears as the well-known ‘Midge’ pregnant Barbie doll, and Cera plays her husband, Allan.
