Ginger Parrot interviews…RedHead Wine creator, Marisa Sergi

Using your red hair to put literal fire into your passion is what we love to see. Nothing is more empowering and pride-inducing than allowing your ginger hair to push your passion (and we speak from experience). Marisa Sergi has done just that, by creating her own wine brand, RedHead.

Born and bred in Ohio but with (red) roots in Italy, Marisa is a third-generation winemaker and a natural redhead through and through. She works tirelessly on building her brand and spreading the ginger love for her two wines: Red Blend and Rosé.

We caught up with her to find out more about her feelings towards her red hair in her childhood, and what hopes and dreams she has for her RedHead Wine.

How did you get into winemaking?

My grandparents had many parties and my grandpa made enough wine for them all. As a three-year-old, I escaped from my grandma’s watchful eye into the wine cellar where she found me trying to get wine out of their barrels with my sippy cup!

Having red hair just helps empower my drive.

I have always associated family, parties, fun, togetherness and love with wine. This family tradition ultimately led me to choose to study Viticulture and Enology, the science of winemaking, at Cornell University, where I enhanced my skills and created a wine label, RedHead, for a project to graduate.

Why did you choose to call your brand RedHead Wine?

That is my name, the name my peers called me in school because of my natural red hair. RedHead parallels the confidence and joy of embracing life’s sweet and spicy moments.

Are there elements of being a redhead that relates to the wine?

Absolutely! RedHead Red Blend’s recipe embraces this personality with a velvety smooth, fruit-forward beginning with notes of strawberries, blackberries, plums, raspberries, with a subtle spice at the finish. The recipe is the perfect balance for a unique experience!

What’s your favourite thing about being a redhead?

I will always stand out without having to try! It is the power of what is unique about me.

It took me some time to stop being ashamed of being different to realise the benefits of being unusual.

Do you believe that your red hair contributes to your personality? How?

My hair colour hasn’t controlled who I have around to educate, mentor and support me. I define how I react, contribute and how I want to mould my future – having red hair just helps empower my drive.

Have you always been proud of your red hair?

As a child I just wanted to blend in but instead I felt the wrath of standing out. It took me some time to stop being ashamed of being different to realise the benefits of being unusual.

Who is your all-time favourite ginger and why?

John Glenn. He was the first American to orbit space and was from Ohio – my home state!

What’s next for you and RedHead Wine?

To continue to grow our distribution. We currently sell RedHead Wine in Ohio and just started in West Virginia. Oh, and I just found out that we are approved to start selling in Pennsylvania!

Emma Kelly is the Editor & Founder of Ginger Parrot. She dresses herself in mismatched multi-seasonal clothing and has a talent for sniffing out the next opportunity for coffee. She believes that any new band with a female musician is the next big thing and that whoever is currently dating Ryan Gosling is the luckiest lady on earth. Her biggest obsession is shopping online for castles, (probably) fueled by childish fantasies of finding her prince and settling down for a life of luxury, bathing in a pool of gin and bitter lemon. Other than that, though, she’ll be incessantly researching the latest gingerful news to deliver to Gingerkind.
