The art of red hair: exploring Colour Theory for redheads

When it comes to redheads and colour theory, there’s a whole palette out there!

Colour theory is the study of how colours interact with one another and how they can be combined in unique and appealing ways. It’s a concept used constantly in art and design, providing a framework for understanding the principles of colour harmony, contrast, and balance.

The colour wheel:

Central to colour theory is the colour wheel, a circular diagram that organises colours based on their relationships to one another. The colour wheel typically consists of primary colours (red, blue, and yellow), secondary colours (orange, green, and purple), and tertiary colours (red-orange, yellow-green, etc).

One of the key principles of colour theory is harmony, which refers to the pleasing arrangement of colours in a composition. Harmonious colour schemes can evoke different moods and emotions, from tranquility and serenity to energy and excitement. Complementary colours, which are located opposite each other on the colour wheel (e.g., orange and blue/green), create strong contrasts and can make elements stand out.

Contrast, on the other hand, refers to the difference between colours in a composition. High-contrast colour schemes can create visual interest and drama, while low-contrast schemes can convey a sense of unity and cohesion.

In the realm of colour theory, red is often seen as a focal point, commanding attention and drawing the eye, which all redheads can likely relate to. It’s a colour of contrast and vibrancy.

By embracing the principles of colour theory and celebrating the unique characteristics of red hair, you can find many colour options that really ‘suit’ a redhead. Although saying that, we like to throw all of the rules out of the window sometimes, wearing baby pink or bright red lipstick!
