The big debate: Is strawberry blonde classed as ‘ginger’ hair?

It is not uncommon for people to argue about whether their hair colour is ginger or strawberry blonde. 

But what even is strawberry blonde?

The shade ‘strawberry blonde’ may appear as a coppery or peach colour. Whereas auburn or “ginger” describes darker hair that lies towards the brown end of the hair spectrum and hair that seems orange in sunlight.

Essentially, strawberry blonde is a slightly different levels of melanin, combining eumelanin (brown to black pigments) with pheomelanin (lighter, redder pigments). All hair and skin tones are made up of melanin and pheomelanin, which are also tied to your genetics. So, considering the shade, those with strawberry blonde hair likely carry more of the lighter pheomelanin pigments.
