Halloween Costumes For Redheads: Pippi Longstocking
Emma Kelly is the Editor & Founder of Ginger Parrot.…
Playful, unconventional and super-strong, Pippi Longstocking is a literary hero to be both admired and (ever so slightly) feared. She has a passionate nature, which very much fits the redhead stereotype, seeing the redhead get fiery and feisty at every opportunity.
Since 1945 the Swedish redhead has been encouraging children to have fun and be brave in all their endeavours, so she’s a positive role model for gingers, large and small.
So, pipe cleaners at the ready – it’s time to get anti-gravity with your red hair. Here’s our guide for dressing up as Pippi Longstocking…
Daisy Street at ASOS: £14.99, $24
Don’t forget your long coloured socks – remember to mismatch!
Make-up
Over-sized freckles are key with creating Pippi’s ever-youthful look. If you’re not on the naturally large side of the freckle spectrum, faking it is easy enough, by using a brown eye or brow pencil to decorate the bridge of your nose.
Hair
Pipe cleaners are the easiest way to create your Pippi braids. After securing your loose plaits with an elastic hair tie, feed the pipe cleaner (find the closest colour to your hair shade) through the braid and mold your red hair so that it points horizontally outwards away from your head.

Emma Kelly is the Editor & Founder of Ginger Parrot. She dresses herself in mismatched multi-seasonal clothing and has a talent for sniffing out the next opportunity for coffee. She believes that any new band with a female musician is the next big thing and that whoever is currently dating Ryan Gosling is the luckiest lady on earth. Her biggest obsession is shopping online for castles, (probably) fueled by childish fantasies of finding her prince and settling down for a life of luxury, bathing in a pool of gin and bitter lemon. Other than that, though, she’ll be incessantly researching the latest gingerful news to deliver to Gingerkind.
