A new sci-fi series Devs, which translates as "Develop" (short for developers - developers), has been released on Hulu for the third week. Critics praised the show quite highly - on Rotten Tomatoes it holds a rating of 84 points, and on Metacritics - 71. Not the least role in this success was played by the script writer and Devs director Alex Garland - the director of the sci-fi thrillers "Out of the Car" and "Annihilation". This is his first television work, which probably won't be his last.
At first, Devs makes us think that the main character of the series is Sergey (Karl Gusman), a Russian programmer who is invited to the elite team of "developers" - a promising (and rather mysterious) department of Amaya. Devs, obviously, are engaged in quantum computing, and they are headed by the charismatic Forest (Nick Offerman). On the first day of work among the developers, Sergey will disappear without a trace (do not spoilerize the details), and the main plot focus will shift to his girlfriend Lily Chan (Sono Mizuno), who works in the encryption department at the same Amaua corporation. Lily is trying to find out what happened after all, suspecting the company of killing a loved one.
We talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the series.
It is worth looking through:
Alex Garland. Being the director of only two full-length films, Alex Garland has already developed a certain recognizable directorial style. There is an interesting story with the author in general - Garland was originally a writer and became famous after the release of the novel "The Beach" in 1996, which he wrote, according to his own words, sitting for a long time without work. Subsequently, in 2000, "The Beach" was filmed by Danny Boyle, inviting a young Leonardo DiCaprio to play the main role. Meanwhile, Garland opened the way to the cinema - Alex enthusiastically wrote scripts for a couple of Boyle's films ("28 days later" and "Hell"), and then decided to try to become a director himself.
Devs is a sister series of both "Out of the Car" and "Annihilation" at the same time. Here there is the same semantic density of filling the frame, a philosophical discussion about the purpose of man and his deplorable completeness as a species. Garland is once again developing a suspense about a technology company led by an eccentric CEO who keeps his priorities and methodologies secret. At the same time, it is clearly more convenient for Alex to build a narrative in Devs - timing does not limit, as well as the ability to lay several genres in parallel storylines at once. Alex Garland is another example of how a talented director finds his creative comfort zone in a serial format as opposed to a full-length movie (besides him, at least Nicholas Winding Ryofn and David Lynch come to mind).
