Itchy diseases, unfortunately, are not uncommon among dogs and cats. Every pet owner has faced this problem at least once in his life. This is especially true for cats who like to spend most of their time outside. If you begin to notice that your cat is constantly scratching and licking its fur, then most likely its skin is affected by a scabies mite. Do not sound the alarm. We need to figure everything out first.
A little bit about scabies mites
Ticks belong to the arachnoid or Arachnoidea class. Therefore, itchy diseases are commonly called arachnoses.
Externally, scabies mites in cats are very small, about 0.2-0.8 mm. Therefore, they are difficult to see with the naked eye. The body of the scabies mite is rounded, gray or brown in color. There is a special proboscis in front. There are four pairs of legs on the abdomen. At the ends of the legs there are suckers, with which the tick is able to firmly fix itself on the skin of the host. Ticks live their entire life cycle on the body of an animal. In the external environment, parasites do not live long, dry and hot weather is especially detrimental to them.
Scabies mites belong to different families. There are representatives who do not parasitize on the skin of carnivores. Some ticks cause diseases only in farm animals. Many parasites pose a danger to humans.
Scabies mites in cats cause the following diseases:
• Sarcaptosis, or itchy scabies;
• Otodectosis, or ear scabies;
• Demodecosis or ironworm;
• Notohedrosis.
Sources of infection
Animals become infected as a result of contact with sick individuals, or with objects, for example:
• Fences;
• Brushes;
• Leash;
• Doghouse;
• Horse blanket.
Scabies mites are very easy to carry, so you can bring them home on your own shoes and clothes.
Puppies and kittens can get infected from a sick mother.
Important! If you have several dogs or cats at home, keep in mind that if one pet is affected, another will immediately become infected!
How does scabies infection occur
First, ticks settle on the animal's body, damage the skin, thereby disrupting its functions. Inflammatory processes begin. The animal experiences itching and painful sensations due to the movement of ticks in the skin. The skin nutrition worsens, peeling and baldness appear. Inflamed skin becomes covered with bleeding cracks, which are subsequently covered with pus. Then the pus dries out and crusts form. The skin, devoid of elasticity, forms thick folds.
