Halloween costumes for redheads: Sally, ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’

If you want equal parts cool to creepy this Halloween, Sally from Disney and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas has got to be the perfect redhead costume.

Mind you, this is no low-maintenance Halloween costume, oh no. Not by any stretch of the imagination. And while we’re on that, imagination is key to this costume.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves, get out your sewing needle, and get messy with face paint.

The dress

There is a corner-cutting option here, or an all-out one. For corner cutting, you can buy a ready-made patchwork dress in the same style as Sally. Job done. But for the all-out Halloween-ers out there, needles at the ready! It’s fairly simple stitch work (particularly if you have a sewing machine) to make your own t-shirt dress.

You will need:

  • Fabric (allow around 2 metres)
  • Needle, pins and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • This pattern

Fabric-wise, there are pre-printed Sally dress fabrics out there, or you can adapt the above pattern by cutting up different fabrics to make up the pieces of the dress. Get creative!

Make-up

This calls for plenty of blue face paint, black contacts lenses, eye liner and false lashes – here’s the messy part! Follow this great tutorial on how to get the Sally look just right:

Aside from the dress and make-up, there’s not much else too taxing for this Halloween costume, just a pair of black and white striped socks and ankle boots.

And to finish it off…

Sally’s red hair, of course! Lucky you’ve got this part of the costume already sorted, dear redhead. Straighten your ginger hair poker straight and keep it loose.
