How redheads can prevent winter hair loss
While it is perfectly normal for your hair to shed more at various points throughout the year, it’s not surprising that you’d want to minimise this as much as possible.
Seasonal hair loss is known as telogen effluvium, which is a natural process that occurs in response to changes in the environment, varying from temperature and UV exposure, to humidity and hormones. The shedding that occurs most noticeably is usually around spring and summer, but this can also happen around late summer to early autumn, too.
And when it reaches late autumn to early winter time, it’s time to figure out ways to prevent hair loss for any other reasons, too. Here are some tips on how redheads can specifically work to prevent hair loss this winter.
Use moisture-rich hair products
Deep-conditioning hair masks can work to replenish any lost moisture from the dry winter air. Products with natural oils like shea butter or coconut oil can provide essential hydration. Look to apply this treatment around every 1 in 3 or 4 washes depending on how thirsty your strands are.
Scalp care
A gentle massage using an oil or just your fingertips can increase blood circulation to your scalp, as well as moisturise and exfoliate your scalp. Think: happy scalp, happy hair.
Use products designed for red hair needs
Opt for shampoos and conditioners that favour natural ingredients over chemicals. These are designed to prevent your natural sebum/oils from being stripped away. Sulphate-free and silicone-free haircare is much better for delicate red hair strands at any time of year.

Cool rinsing
It may not be preferable when the weather is colder, but your red hair will thank you for it. Rinse your hair with cool water at the end of your wash to seal the cuticles after shampooing and conditioning. This helps retain moisture and natural shine.
Manage changes in temperature
The constant shift from cold outdoor air to warm indoor environments can dehydrate your scalp and your strands, wicking away moisture. Protect your hair outdoors by wearing a hat or scarf to shield it from the harsh elements, and opt for one lined with silk/satin to help prevent breakage.
Be especially gentle with wet hair
Hair is most fragile when wet. Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle and comb through you conditioner and hair mask treatments.
Limit heat styling
Minimise the use of heat styling tools to prevent further damage. If you do use them, apply a heat protectant spray and choose the lowest heat setting. Otherwise, try to let your hair air-dry whenever possible.

Stress can play a big part
Bear in mind that the stress hormone, cortisol, amongst others, can contribute to increased hair loss, so talk to your doctor for advice if you need support.
Sleep on satin
Swap to satin pillowcases to reduce friction while you sleep, which can help prevent breakage and maintain your hair’s natural oils, too.
While a level of hair shedding is unavoidable, particularly at key points of the year, there are ways to help protect your red hair strands from excess hair loss in autumn/winter.
