Spreading the Ginger Love: I collect gingers

Making friends at Redhead Days 2012 was one of our favourite things about the weekend-long fest of ginger escapades.

We met some incredible individuals, and amongst our new collection of ginger mates is Anthea Pokroy, a flame-haired artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, who does something quite brilliant: she actually collects gingers.

Anthea’s project, I collect gingers, began in 2010, when she decided to put together a collection of more than 500 red-haired beauties from all over the world, and immortalise them through the art of photography.

I Collect Gingers - Close Up

From that point onwards, her aim was to explore the ‘otherness’ of Gingerdom and celebrate its beauty; the collective experience that redheads share when they meet, including their ability to talk for hours on end about life as a ginger (you all know what I mean!).

In a context that has historically been obsessed and oppressed by skin colour, I collect gingers looks at redheads as a self-identified ‘race’, and explores the history behind the discrimination placed against those having naturally red hair.

Anthea has documented her ‘collection’ from all over South Africa, but also in Holland at Redhead Days 2012, where Anthea hosted a photography tent, taking snaps of gingers aplenty to add to her ‘red’ pool.

And, two and half years later, Anthea’s work will be presented in her debut solo exhibition at Circa Gallery in Johannesburg from 17th January until 2 March 2013.

But, that’s not all. Running adjacent to the I collect gingers exhibition is the option to contribute to an Indiegogo campaign to immortalise these beautiful creatures in a photography book, with pledges available to purchase your own copy, containing images of all 500 gingers that Anthea has collected during her mission.

You need to hurry though, as this the Indiegogo campaign ends on Saturday 1st December 2012!

Here’s I collect gingers‘ founder Anthea Pokroy to tell you more…

So you see, the I collect gingers book would be perfect as a Christmas gift for any redhead lover, art lover, or redheaded art lover.

Spread the ginger love!

Other than that, though, she’ll be incessantly researching the latest gingerful news to deliver to Gingerkind.
