Looks like redheads will be able to get another well-deserved fix of being at the centre of attention, in an upcoming TV adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, the 1908 children’s novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
With more than 50 million copies of the book sold worldwide, the still-popular Canadian story of the life of feisty and redheaded orphan, Anne Shirley, has been adaptated, remade, then rejigged again into plays, musicals, cartoons, films and TV shows, and this time will be picked up by Breakthrough Entertainment for release as a TV drama in summer 2013.
And both Montgomery’s granddaughter Kate Macdonald Butler and Executive Producer Joan Lambur believe it’s important to the story that a natural redhead takes the role.
“I think it’s important she be Canadian because this is probably the most well-known Canadian brand. I would feel that would be the right move,” said Lambur. “We’re going to find a redhead for sure.
“The goal is to create a new Anne for a modern-day and really present her in a more global perspective,” she added.
The interpretation of gingers has been hugely impacted by Anne Shirley, also. Not only is she the inspiration for Christina Hendricks‘ signature bright red mane, but the awesome protagonist is the reason for so many great ginger quotes. In case you didn’t know, here are a couple:
So if you’re not yet clued up on this tale, then get on it; you’ll feel empowered by the end of it!
“Anne’s a very contemporary spirit, she’s an independent thinker and a inspiration to girls around the world,” says Peter Williamson, Principal at Breakthrough.
The good news for us? Well, not only do we have another ginger TV heroine to follow Bree from Desperate Housewives, and Joan from Mad Men, but auditions will soon open to play the leading lady. So if you think you’ve got what it takes and are Canadian (sorry others, but we still love you), stay tuned!
