Those who have been lucky enough to attend the Redhead Days in the Netherlands over its nine years of gingerful existence will know the wondrous feeling of spending a whole weekend surrounded by thousands of fellow redheads. Making friends, feeling proud of your red hair and having many, many photos taken of you, is all part of the experience.
The adrenaline soon wears off though, as the realisation hits you that it’s one whole year until it can happen all over again. *sniffs*
But now, thanks to the clever clogs at Redhead Days, their new affiliate programme means that countries all over the world can help spread the ginger joy, extending that warm, fuzzy feeling throughout the year.
Redhead Days Chicago is the first two-day version to take part in the affiliate scheme, and organisers even have their hearts set on breaking the world record of most redheads in one place, which is currently held by the original Redhead Days event with a whopping 1,714 ginger heads in 2013.
Held in Highwood, Chicago, Illinois, on 6th-7th June, the new festival is organised by natural redhead Jim Stoecker, who jumped at the chance to set up the Chicago event after stumbling upon Redhead Days in Breda, Netherlands, in 2012.
He said: “I hope to give other redheads the same great feeling I got when I was first around so many other redheads at the festival in Holland.”
The family-friendly event encourages redheads (and their appreciators) of all ages to head over to Highwood’s City Hall Park from 10am-5pm on 6th-7th June, where participants can register to be a part record breaking attempt photograph. Attendees can also participate in the all-important Carrot Cake Contest, taking place on Saturday from 1pm.
But the most important moment of the whole weekend will be Sunday at 2pm, when the redhead gathering and world record attempt takes place, with registered redheads asked to wear a blue top to enhance their ginger hair in the photo.
Creator of the Redhead Days in Breda, the Netherlands, the much-loved Bart Rouwenhorst, said: “When people come together as redheads, they just look at each other. They have this certain bond. And I think this whole event will some day expand to multiple events, maybe across the world.”
